Age of Empires II spans a thousand years, from the fall of Rome through the Middle Ages in which players lead one of 13 civilisations into greatness. You start off small, with nothing more than a town centre and a few peasants and from this meagre beginning slowly add infrastructure to your civilization that either enhances your resource gathering or pumps out tons of varied military units.
The game keeps the epic scope of Age of Empires' game play while evolving the combat and economic features.
